Finished Object: Familiar Shawl

Let's try and keep the momentum going, right?

I'm messing around with machine photos for work, so I might as well write a blog post. This pretty much brings me up to speed with the backlog. I've got one cushion cover left from the FAL Q4 list that I haven't blogged, but I'm currently working on stock and some projects that still have a long way to go, so there might be a bit of a lull.

This is the Familiar Shawl, the last of the six patterns from The Shawl Society II this year. And I've got to say, I think it might be my favourite. Although that might just be because it took me about a week to knit, and I've been wearing it ever since.

I'd never done cables before this pattern, and I'm not usually one for working with chunky yarn; I don't have a huge amount in stash, so I pottered the internet for some inspiration (I wasn't too keen on the suggested yarn, it didn't look very me)

Eventually I found Malabrigo Mecha; another first as I've never knitted with anything by Malabrigo despite them being one the trendy companies. I can see why; their yarn is beautiful.
This is Whales Road, which instantly called out; it's got a mysticism to the name that I can't resist, and the deep blues and purples with little bits of turquoise is utterly me.
It was a bit of a pig to wind from skein to ball, but I've had worse. And it knitted up beautifully.
There's slightly more to a skein than the pattern called for, so I've actually got a little bit (maybe half a skein) left. I might buy another skein at some point and make a hat.

The pattern itself was really simple, yet looks really nice. The cable instructions made total sense, and I just used a short and chunky DPN rather than a cable needle.

It also blocked wonderfully and went from a smushed up pile of yarn to a gorgeous shawl.

Sorry for the chest shot, I couldn't get a good photo of this when it was on for love nor money. I'm unlikely to wear it as a round the shoulder shawl, that's not how I tend to wear shawls, but wrapped round my neck, it's soft and lovely.

Chances are I'm going to make another of these. I've got some green and black chunky in the depths of the stash that would look nice I think, and I'm lacking for green accessories.

Some random things

So I'm currently faffing around at work, waiting for a meeting that might not happen and trying no to go mad with the current project I'm working on (pro tip: don't make the English graduate computerise the electrical drawings. bad things happen) My pretty fabric for my post xmas present sewing showed up at work on Friday (when I was off doing xmas shopping in MK) so I didn't get it until today. It's so pretty! And I managed some impressive colour matching given I was working on my not very well calibrated work monitor! This is going to be tucked away until I'm done, so I'm not tempted before I'm done with presents.   I posted the other night about how much I love my seam ripper (there was an issue with squid, which will be covered in a post later when I can get all the photos in the right order, so, when I get home) and someone asked what it was, so I took this to illustrate the point. It sees a fair amount of use, and this weekend

Finish-a-long Quarter 2

Life, being what it is, I never signed up for Quarter 1. I didn't have a huge number of projects on the go, and I was not in a great place. But things are looking up now. And up, and up, if you're looking at the stack of unfinished projects, so without further ago, I present the list of stuff I would like to finish this quarter...

Xmas present 3 - the squid

This was the big one. The one that was going to the person whose opinion as a crafter I care about, and a person who has had a bit of a rough year. Thankfully, by some miracle, it all came together, although this was NOT without disasters.
